Day five ten minute recollection

Woke up late again today, hoping to break that streak, need to get to bed earlier.

The youngest and I played soccer with a small soft rubber ball in the playroom, every time one of us scored I’d shout “goooooooooal!” and “golazo!” like I remember from the summer I watched lots of World Cup on the Spanish language TV channel, I think that’s back when TVs still had rabbit ears and dinosaurs roamed the earth. The kid picked up the golazo thing, which was funny. After while she decided she wanted to chill out and play a computer game so I washed the dishes. (The oldest was in her room and the middle was on a walk with her mom.) I listened to Night Vale while I washed the dishes, figured out where I’d gotten to in it when I first listened and then trailed off, so that’s good. The oldest is still really into that show and we had fun seeing it live last night so I figure I’ll pick it back up. Then I frittered away some time on bad news on the internet, then the 5yo and I went for a walk.

There are tiny white bugs in large numbers outside. I don’t actually know if the bugs are white, they have whitish wings that are much larger than their bodies and catch the light in a way that looks bright white. From a distance a cloud of them look almost like large dust motes or pollen, or maybe dandelion seeds. I don’t know what they are and don’t recall seeing them. I might look it up later but it might be better not to know, ever the dilemma: learn and end up with satisfied curiosity and the punishment of knowledge it turns out one did not want, or remain pleasantly ignorant (we can all agree I’m pleasant, and if anyone disagrees, well, I’m happily ignorant of that fact) but beset by mild curiosity.

We walked down the block a ways and a tree had many birds in it, I don’t know how many, it was hard to see because of the angle and the sun, but they were so loud! It was like a scene on TV with a ‘busy with birds’ soundtrack. Then all of a sudden when we were under it they all went silent, completely so, like someone hit pause on that soundtrack. I think they all flew off when we were at an angle that we couldn’t see them, but I don’t actually know. We saw and heard two more trees like that, I was joking that they were bird clubs, gathering to hang out and deliberate. There’s a twitter joke to be made here - we’re all just birds flocking in large numbers twittering loudly, shitting out opinions on world events and culture. I didn’t say it was a good joke.

The catalpa tree at the mid point in our walk is in fine form, huge seed pods. Some of the other trees are starting to get a touch of fall color, dark red hints and yellows around the edges of the green. It’s pretty and nice to think about more properly fall weather - like we had today! - coming. Sweater season, and soup. Soup, like tea, is made of wool, which is how it warms our insides. Hoping to do some weight carries in the back yard before sun sets, and get in a run on Tuesday, long work day tomorrow which I don't love but I am at peace.

day forty three, only sort of a recollection

 I haven’t written a recollection in a while.
